How Carl Smith Creates Art from Wood Found in Parks and Other Outdoor Spaces

For artist Carl Smith, nature is his palette.

Where others may see a tree branch, he sees the raw material for a table centerpiece, wall décor, or handmade wooden earrings.

“I can see a piece of wood that really speaks to me, and I go to work,” said Smith, who has participated in various art festivals throughout Central Alabama, including the Moss Rock Festival and Woodlawn Festival, as well as the Magic City Art Connection, which recently held its 42nd annual event at Sloss Furnaces.

At Nature’s Art, his home-based business in Fairfield, Alabama, Smith creates unique pieces from wood of all sizes that he finds in parks, on the side of the road, or even in bodies of water. One of his first pieces was crafted from wood he found just off Alabama State Route 119, known locally as Highway 119.

“It stood out to me and actually spoke to me,” Smith recalled.

He used that wood to create what he described as a “Sitting Monkey,” named because of its shape.

While he shaped his art initially based on how it spoke to him, he learned that “people see things differently when it comes to art,” he said. “What one person sees, another can’t see in a piece of art, so I stopped naming my work and let the pieces speak to their prospective buyers.”

Smith is self-taught. He’s never taken an art class nor watched a YouTube video on artistry.

“When you’re connected to a gift like that [art] you don’t know it, but you have a love for it, it draws you real tight and you keep on working with it … the more you work with [wood] the more you bond with it,” he said. “The wood actually tells me what it needs. Each piece tells me what I need to do to it.”

Referrals

While Smith, 68, began with larger art for homes like small statues, table centerpieces and small tables his most popular items have now evolved to more personal accessories like earrings, bracelets, and necklaces — all made of wood.

Most customers place their orders by contacting Smith via Facebook and Instagram. Referrals are a good source of business, too, he said.

“I receive more orders for these personal items, so hands down, these are the most popular pieces I create at this time,” said Smith.

His creations can range in price from $100 for jewelry to $5,000 for interior or exterior designs — or even more depending on the piece. He’s sold one work, a stand-alone tabletop piece of art titled “Soaring,” for $3,800.

“I named it ‘Soaring’ because of the shape of the wood,” Smith explained. “I saw it resembling a hero character with one arm extended and aimed upward toward victory.”

Water Works

Smith, an only child, was born in Georgetown, South Carolina, but grew up in Birmingham. He attended A.H. Parker High School, where he was a drum major with the school band and also played drums with a band called Heavy Traffic. After graduating in 1975, his love of music grew and he eventually learned to play the conga drums, which he still plays, performing occasionally with local bands.

Smith’s artistry actually began 40 years ago, when he was employed with the Birmingham Water Works at the Cahaba Pumping Station, where he would test water samples. He’d sometimes see pieces of driftwood floating in the water, and he would collect them and craft them into works of art. When he left the utility in 1988, his passion for wood art remained.

One of the most challenging requests Smith completed early on was a king-size headboard made of wisteria vines. He also uses English ivy vine to create pedestals, shadow boxes, flowerpot stands, and even entertainment centers.

“I began to see art in the vine that’s wrapped around trees, which I later discovered was the English ivy vine,” Smith said.

Taking Care of Home

In addition to running Nature’s Art, he also spends time caring for his mother, Pearldine Smith, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

He learned a lot about business from his mother, who owned Pearl’s Boutique on 3rd Avenue West (across from the KFC), where she specialized in sequined dresses for weddings and proms back in the 1980s.

“It’s an honor to take care of her each day,” said Smith. “It’s helped slow me down, so I can focus on my artwork.”

“I also have a garden, so I’m able to get outside, grow some fresh foods, … and serve [my mother]. … It’s been a wonderful experience.”

Smith has five adult children — three daughters and two sons. Two of his daughters live in Atlanta, Georgia, while his other daughter and both sons call Birmingham home.

Appellate Judge Bill Lewis Appointed First Black Republican on Alabama Supreme Court

BY KIM CHANDLER | Associated Press

MONTGOMERY — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Tuesday appointed state appellate Judge Bill Lewis to the Alabama Supreme Court. He will be the first Black Republican to serve on the court.

Lewis replaces Justice Jay Mitchell, who resigned Monday. Lewis most recently served on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. Ivey appointed him to the position last year. He was previously the presiding circuit judge in the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County.

“Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama,” Ivey said in a statement. “His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice.”

Lewis is the fourth Black justice to serve on the state’s highest court and the first Black Republican.

The three previous Black justices — Oscar Adams, Ralph Cook and John England — were all Democrats.

Alabama’s appellate judges run in statewide partisan elections, just like the governor, attorney general and other top officials. The court, like other statewide offices, has become dominated by Republicans. The state Supreme Court has been all-Republican for over a decade and has been comprised entirely of white justices since 2001.

A group of Black voters in 2016 filed a federal lawsuit that unsuccessfully challenged the state’s method of selecting judges, saying the statewide elections have resulted in all-white courts in a state where one in four residents is Black.

Ivey will appoint Lewis’ replacement to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals.

In his resignation letter to Ivey, Mitchell, also a Republican, said he wants to play a more active role in politics and will make an announcement about his future in the coming days.

“President Trump is moving boldly to restore the United States Constitution — and we must ensure that his agenda takes root not only in Washington, but also in the states,” Mitchell wrote.

Mitchell is best known for writing an opinion regarding frozen embryos that said couples could sue for wrongful death of a minor child after their frozen embryos were accidentally destroyed. The ruling temporarily upended IVF services in the state as clinics became concerned about civil liability.

The work will be performed under a single Prime General Contractor who will coordinate the work of this project.  Particular and specific care will be required to coordinate complex shutdowns, limit disturbances and follow strict Infection Controls and Interim Life Safety Measures (ICRA/ILSM) requirements for the protection of patients, family and staff.   The Prime General Contractors seeking to be pre-qualified will require experience with similar size and type hospital projects performed in and adjacent to an operating hospital environment and with the implementation and maintenance of infection control measures, interim life safety measures, coordinating shutdowns, and maintaining a clean and organized job site in an operating hospital. The General Contractor must have experience with representative projects as a General Contractor (not as a Construction Manager, Program Manager, etc.)

City of Birmingham Outlines Priorities in Newly Unveiled $591 Million Budget

0
On Tuesday Mayor Randall L. Woodfin presented a proposed $591 million Fiscal Year 2026 operating budget. (File)

By Barnett Wright | The Birmingham Times

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin on Tuesday unveiled a proposed $591 million budget for Fiscal 2026 that includes money for street resurfacing, public safety, and for the first-time $500,000 for Park and Recreation youth sports.

Earlier this year the Birmingham Crime Commission delivered a report for reducing homicides and gun violence in the city that recommended “expanding after-school programs and recreational opportunities to divert youth from criminal behavior” by reimplementing Police Athletic Teams/League (P.A.T.).

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin

Woodfin said a detailed plan for youth sports league “… a holistic approach that touches multiple sports,” could come as soon as next week, he said.

The city’s fiscal year begins July 1.

While the $500,000 for youth sports is a small amount of the budget, which is up from the $582 million last year, it’s part of nearly $10 million in youth investments that include $2 million Birmingham Promise for City School students: $1 million for financial literacy in schools and $1 million for conflict resolution for students.

“This budget represents our shared priorities,” Woodfin said. “We will continue to invest in our neighborhoods to resurface streets, invest in sidewalks and traffic calming, and remove blight. These are common requests from our residents that we are committed to providing.”

Here are budget priorities as outlined by the city:

NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION

    • Street Paving: $15 million
    • Weed Abatement: $3 million (up $250,000)
    • Demolition: $2 million (up $500,000)
    • Sidewalks: $1 million
    • Traffic Calming: $500,000
    • Recycling: $300,000

PUBLIC SAFETY AND VIOLENCE REDUCTION

    • Police vehicles: $1 million (part of $6 million rolling stock investment)
    • Common Ground Conflict Resolution in BCS: $1 million
    • Park and Recreation Safe Haven Initiative: $625,000 (up $125,000)
    • RESTORE Youth Re-entry Initiative: $450,000 (up $225,000)
    • Additional Community Violence Intervention: $1.5 million

HOMELESSNESS

    • Services for the Unhoused: $1.5 million (new funding)
    • Community Development Block Grants: $800,000 (estimated, annually)

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

    • Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority: $11 million
    • Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit: $3 million
    • Birmingham on Demand Powered by VIA: $2.5 million

 CITY EMPLOYEES

    • 1 percent Cost of Living Adjustment for All Employees: $4.225 million
    • 5 percent Merit Pay for Eligible Employees: $3.9 million
    • Longevity Pay for Eligible Employees: $1 million
    • The City Covers All Healthcare Benefit Increases for City Employees: $3.6 million
    • City Contribution to Pension Fund: $40 million (estimated pending actuary’s report)

Meanwhile, the Birmingham City Council has set a public hearing for Wednesday, June 4 at 5:30 pm to discuss the proposed FY 2026 budget. That meeting will be held in the Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall.

The budget proposal can be viewed at www.birminghamal.gov/2026budget.

Birmingham’s Aubrey Bennett Named One of Alabama’s Top School Teachers

By Don Rhodes II | The Birmingham Times

Sitting comfortably in his classroom on the main floor at George Washington Carver High School in North Birmingham, Aubrey Bennett becomes emotional.

Bennett is describing the moment he heard his name as Alabama’s Alternate Teacher of the Year during a ceremony this month in Montgomery.

The moment was “surreal,” he said. Overcome with joy and pride, he credited his family, friends, and Birmingham City Schools for their unwavering support.

“Meeting the other finalists, who are all amazing educators, made it even more humbling,” he said. “The award could’ve gone to any one of them. I’m proud of Carver, proud of my students, and proud of the North Birmingham community.”

For the 42-year-old, Bennett, who teaches African American History, being named Alternate Teacher of the Year is more than just a professional honor, it’s a deeply personal milestone that reflects his passion for education, his community, and the students he serves at Carver High.

“We are proud of the great work Mr. Bennett contributes at Carver every day,” said Dr. Mark Sullivan, Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools. “He makes an impact on the scholars at Carver in several areas of school and community life.”

With 17 years of experience in education, Bennett has spent the past 11 years at Carver, where he teaches 12th-grade U.S. Government, Economics, and Advanced Placement African American History.

After receiving the award, Bennett recalled the flood of emotion and the pride he felt for his mother, [Patsy Bennett] who made sacrifices to support his education. “There was jubilation and extreme euphoria,” he said. “It felt like a win not just for me, but for every teacher who pours their heart into their students.”

He also credited his family for shaping the man and educator he is today. Raised with strong discipline by his mother and grandparents, Bennett said those values influence the way he runs his classroom. “I want my students to feel safe and respected. My family taught me that love and accountability go hand in hand.”

Humble Beginnings

Winning the award, Bennett said was life-changing. “People recognize me in public now,” he said with a laugh. “It’s humbling, but it’s also opened up opportunities I never imagined especially leadership roles” within the Birmingham City Schools district as well as different speaking engagements.

Having previously served as an Athletic Director (at Carver), Bennett shared that the award has sparked renewed encouragement from others to return to administrative leadership.

Bennett’s path to teaching wasn’t linear. Inspired by a fourth-grade teacher at Kinne Street Elementary, who introduced the young Bennett to the wonders of history and travel, he would eventually pursue a business degree while playing college football at Marist College – Poughkeepsie NY where he played defensive back.

In 2005 Bennett came to visit a friend in Birmingham and never left.

“Birmingham is a growing city, low cost of living, great people,” Bennett said on why he stayed. “Two of my best friends from Syracuse live here, warm weather (no snow).”

But after moving to Birmingham in 2005 from New York, and coming to work as a youth counselor at Oak Mountain Youth Services, he discovered his true passion — working with kids. That realization launched him into a new career path, one rooted in purpose and service.

A Life Beyond the Classroom

Outside of school, Bennett is a self-proclaimed anime lover with a passion for Marvel movies, sci-fi films, working out, and spending time with friends and family. He shared a particular fondness for anime JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Demon Slayer and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I like Marvel and anime because they both offer immersive storytelling, unique characters, and powerful themes — but in very different ways. Marvel combines superhero action with human struggles,” he said. “I enjoy how each character has flaws, complex backstories, and moments of growth. There’s something inspiring about seeing heroes like Spider-Man or Iron Man balance saving the world while dealing with personal challenges.”

He continued, “On the other hand, anime often dives deeper into emotion, creativity, and philosophical questions. Whether it’s the intensity of Attack on Titan, the heart in Your Name, or the life lessons in Naruto, anime connects on a more personal level. The animation styles and world-building are also incredibly unique. Both Marvel and anime help me escape, think deeper, and feel more connected to larger ideas like justice, identity, and resilience.”

Reflecting on his journey, Bennett acknowledged the challenges he faced, including financial hardship and pursuing alternative certification. “I’ve been blessed, but it wasn’t easy,” he said. “This award is a testament to faith, hard work, and the people who believed in me. My story shows what happens when you take things one day at a time and never stop pushing.”

During the 30-minute interview, Bennett said he believes education should equip students with tools to navigate and change the world around them. “My goal is to create informed, compassionate citizens,” he said. “Understanding laws, knowing how to fight for your rights, and being financially responsible, these are lessons my students will carry for life.”

‘[The Kiss] was Symbolic of us Becoming One, And I was Just so Excited About That Part’

TAMEKA & ANGELO HINES

Live: McCalla

Married: Feb. 14, 1993

Met: Fall 1991, at Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer in their 12th grade English class. Angelo remembers he first saw Tameka in their freshmen year, “and she blew my mind then,” but they wouldn’t make a formal acquaintance until three years later.

“Tameka was popular, and I wasn’t… I never talked to her, but I would always talk to my friends about her being ‘the one’. I think God didn’t allow us to talk to each other until the 12th grade when it was time for us to be together,” he said.

Although they had been in the same English class since the fall semester of their senior year, it wasn’t until the spring semester as they drew closer to prom and graduation that their crush intensified.

“I told my high school best friends that I liked Angelo and said ‘I’m gonna marry him and I’m going to the prom with him,” Tameka recalled. “And one day, I had to go to the library to pick up my senior book, and he was walking by and my friend said, ‘she likes you, and wanna go to the prom with you,’ and he stopped and grabbed my hand, and we’ve been together ever since.”

First date: Senior prom, at the Bessemer Civic Center. They wore black and gold.

“One of the things I remember about prom is that we kept our hands on each other the whole time and somebody yelled ‘y’all get a room’,” Tameka said, and they both laughed. “And that night, she found out I had two left feet,” said Angelo, “we only had one dance because we didn’t stay long…”

Angelo and Tameka said they were intentional about how they spent their time that evening because they had “other plans.”

The turn: For Tameka, the turn came the night they held their first conversation. “Angelo was big on poetry, and in my senior book, he wrote this long letter to me confessing that he loved me, my brown eyes, and he put his phone number in there. And our first conversation went on all night long. Once we connected, we were serious, he was and is a safe space for me,” said Tameka.

“She really pulled me out of my shyness … having her in my life at that point let me know that I was in the safest place I would ever be, and for me it was immediate. I knew I wanted to have her in my life for the rest of my life,” said Angelo.

The proposal: Christmas 1992, at Tameka’s parents’ home in Bessemer.

“I came over to bring her gift and ended up surprising her by proposing and she said ‘yes’ (at 18 years old),” Angelo said. “Her mom was actually blown away by us, she knew we had [a deep relationship] and that I really cared about her. I did talk to Tameka’s dad beforehand, and he was supportive. We had been together for a while, and my proposal was well received.”

“I didn’t know the proposal was coming so I was surprised and elated, but I knew that he would be my husband,” Tameka said. “Our relationship was so strong…he was always at our house eating all our food, his grandma would ask him ‘where are you eating at? who’s feeding you?’” she laughed. “So marriage was a natural next step, there was nowhere else for us to go but forward.”

Tameka and Angelo Hines met in 1991 in an English class at Jess Lanier High School in Bessemer. The couple married in 1993. (Provided Photos)

The wedding: At Tameka’s home church, Sixth Ave Beulah Baptist Church in Bessemer, officiated by Reverend Samuel Marshall. Their colors were red and white. “We gave my mama three weeks to put a wedding together,” Tameka said. The newlyweds-to-be had found an apartment and were going to move in together before getting married, but Tameka’s parents said, ‘no ma’am’, and got them over the broom before she left the nest. My wedding dress was even borrowed,” said Tameka.

Most memorable for the bride was her first public kiss with Angelo.

“I was looking forward to the kiss and I wanted a deep dive kind of kiss that shook the world, but my husband said ‘no.’ To know him is to know he’s very conservative,” Tameka laughed. “The kiss was big for me because it was the first time that I would kiss him in front of my mama and daddy, it was symbolic of us becoming one, and I was just so excited about that part.”

Most memorable for the groom was, “seeing Tameka walk down the aisle. And I remember that that was the first time she ever saw me cry, and wouldn’t be the last because I’m always crying,” Angelo laughed “But waiting to receive her into my arms at the altar is a moment that I’ll never forget.”

Their honeymoon was quite the adventure. Angelo’s well-meaning grandmother paid for them to go on an 8th grade graduation trip with St. Frances Catholic School, on a cruise/trip to the Bahamas. “It cost $199, and that paid for us to ride the ship there, but we did not have a cabin. I don’t even know how that worked. I just remember being hungry and sleepy, but we have always been the kind to take lemons and make lemonade,” Tameka said.

“We didn’t have a room on the boat, but we found our way to a lounge, and we sat there and we talked and planned out how we saw our lives, and when we got tired she laid on me and I leaned on her, and we rode all the way to the Bahamas like that. And I think that became the posture of our marriage…that is the way we have faced everything that comes our way, we call it the Hines way,” Angelo said.

Once they got to the Bahamas, “it rained the whole time … But we did have a lot of fun, and I wouldn’t trade that trip or experience for anything else. We still laugh about memories from that trip to this day,” Tameka said.

“Glory to God, we have more than made up for that trip with many more [in general] over the years…,” said Angelo.

Words of wisdom: “The time that Tameka and I have shared together has inspired me to tell others to always be in prayer,” said Angelo, “always ask God what to do. Secondly, laughter. Always be in laughter because it helps you see your way through and see the lighter side of things without things feeling overwhelming and so serious. And thirdly, you have to communicate and forgive.”

“Our love has been a journey, and I love my husband more now than I have ever loved him. We got work, and church, and life, but we do it all [with understanding], and we do as much as we can together so we don’t have to fight to make time for one another. We’ve made sure to nurture what we have, and we’ve found our way,” Tameka said. “You have to forgive and not hold each other’s thoughts against them. Love is tough, and it’s work, but we hate to see people give up without fighting for it. We continue to hold hands and be lovey-dovey because marriage is a beautiful journey.”

Rep: Terri Sewell on Biden’s Cancer Diagnosis: ‘He’s Been a Fighter His Whole Life’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his office said Sunday.

The finding came after the 82-year-old reported urinary symptoms, which led doctors to discover a nodule on his prostate. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday, with the cancer cells having spread to the bone.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” his office said. “The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell

Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell, a longtime Biden supporter, said on X, formerly Twitter, “Our thoughts and prayers are with President Biden and his family on the recent news of his cancer diagnosis. President Biden has been a fighter his whole life. I am confident that his strength and resilience will serve him well through this health challenge. On behalf of the people of Alabama 7th Congressional District, we are praying for strength, healing and a full recovery.”

Prostate cancers are graded for aggressiveness using what’s known as a Gleason score. The scores range from 6 to 10, with 8, 9 and 10 prostate cancers behaving more aggressively. Biden’s office said his score was 9, suggesting his cancer is among the most aggressive.

When prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it often spreads to the bones. Metastasized cancer is much harder to treat than localized cancer because it can be hard for drugs to reach all the tumors and completely root out the disease.

However, when prostate cancers need hormones to grow, as in Biden’s case, they can be susceptible to treatment that deprives the tumors of hormones.

Outcomes have improved in recent decades and patients can expect to live with metastatic prostate cancer for four or five years, said Dr. Matthew Smith of Massachusetts General Brigham Cancer Center.

“It’s very treatable, but not curable,” Smith said. “Most men in this situation would be treated with drugs and would not be advised to have either surgery or radiation therapy.”

Many political leaders sent Biden their wishes for his recovery.

President Donald Trump, a longtime political opponent, posted on social media that he was saddened by the news and “we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, said on social media that she was keeping him in her family’s “hearts and prayers during this time.”

“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” Harris wrote.

Former President Barack Obama said his thoughts and prayers were with Biden, his former vice president, lauding his toughness. “Nobody has done more to find breakthrough treatments for cancer in all its forms than Joe, and I am certain he will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace,” Obama wrote on social media.

The health of Biden was a dominant concern among voters during his time as president. After a calamitous debate performance in June while seeking reelection, Biden abandoned his bid for a second term. Harris became the nominee and lost to Trump, a Republican who returned to the White House after a four-year hiatus.

But in recent days, Biden rejected concerns about his age despite reporting in the new book “Original Sin” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson that aides had shielded the public from the extent of his decline while serving as president.

In February 2023, Biden had a skin lesion removed from his chest that was a basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. And in November 2021, he had a polyp removed from his colon that was a benign, but potentially pre-cancerous lesion.

In 2022, Biden made a “cancer moonshot” one of his administration’s priorities with the goal of halving the cancer death rate over the next 25 years. The initiative was a continuation of his work as vice president to address a disease that had killed his older son, Beau, who died from brain cancer in 2015.

His father, when announcing the goal to halve the cancer death rate, said this could be an “American moment to prove to ourselves and, quite frankly, the world that we can do really big things.”
