2028 Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds to be Hosted in Birmingham

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced this week that the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the City of Birmingham have been selected to host the 2028 Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds. This championship will take place at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

“Birmingham is excited to welcome back ​​Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds,” said Mayor Randall Woodfin. “We’re proud to show off our city and facilities to visiting student-athletes, teams and fans in the upcoming years. The SEC and Knight Eady have been instrumental in bringing NCAA Championships back to Birmingham. Consistency in hosting these championships means a lot to our city and the community of college basketball fans in Birmingham. We’re excited to continue the momentum and host the 2025 NCAA Women’s March Madness Regional, as we build towards welcoming the Men’s First and Second Rounds back in 2028.”

Together with Knight Eady, the SEC submitted a competitive bid that showcased the experience the SEC and Knight Eady have hosting championships alongside partners at the BJCC and the City of Birmingham.

“The Southeastern Conference will be proud to host the 2028 Division I Men’s Basketball First and Second Rounds and bring the best in men’s basketball to the City of Birmingham,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “We look forward to collaborating with the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex and Knight Eady to provide student-athletes and fans with a memorable championship experience.”

“It’s an honor to be awarded these bids alongside the SEC,” said Michael Eady, President of Knight Eady. “We saw sellout crowds when we hosted the 2023 NCAA Men’s March Madness First and Second Rounds and expect to see that in 2025 when we host the NCAA Women’s March Madness Regional. From now until 2028, we’re all working to continue the momentum from the 2023 and 2025 NCAA championships in Birmingham.”

The SEC and Knight Eady previously hosted the 2023 NCAA Men’s March Madness First and Second Rounds and will host the 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in Legacy Arena March 28-March 31, 2025.

Hiring 172 Patrol Officers in Birmingham Will Meet Staffing Goals, Woodfin Says

Mayor Randall Woodfin said Thursday the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) will prioritize the hiring of 172 patrol officers to achieve staffing targets in the Birmingham police precincts. That number is part of a recruitment and retention plan the mayor has outlined to address the staffing shortages in BPD, he said.

“The ideal number of patrol officers needed to police all 99 neighborhoods across the city is 440. We are focused on hiring 172 patrol officers,” the mayor said. “This proposed plan is a supercharged effort to enhance our police patrol. BPD is hiring, and we are looking for good men and good women.”

The recommendation would increase the signing bonus for new officers to $10,000 and establish a quarterly retention bonus of $2,500 for officers who have been in the department for two or more years.

The city issued the following numbers to “provide an accurate number to the public” it said: the current total vacancies for all sworn personnel in BPD are 223. That includes 172 patrol officers, and 34 officers assigned to administration, operations and investigative bureaus. There are 17 additional vacancies made up of sergeants, lieutenants and captains.

“As stated, the recommended recruitment and retention plan prioritizes patrol officers to strengthen police coverage in Birmingham neighborhoods,” the mayor said.

On Tuesday, Woodfin proposed a $15.8 million plan for recruiting and retaining officers for the Birmingham Police Department, a step he told the City Council was “necessary” in light of the growing number of homicides in the city, including a recent mass shooting in Five Points South that left four dead and 17 others wounded.

Many have questioned whether a lack of staffing in BPD is contributing to the higher number of murders which threatened to set records in the city. Birmingham City Council President Darryl O’Quinn has previously said the city is down nearly 300 officers. In August, wbhm.org reported that the Birmingham police department has 250 fewer officers than what its budget calls for. As recently as June, the department was down 320 officers and by some estimates, that’s about half of a fully staffed BPD, the site reported.

Woodfin said Tuesday “a lot of numbers out there that are just false.”

While the recommendations presented this week to the city council would enhance recruiting and officer retention, the department has taken multiple steps in recent years, the city said. For example, officer pay has increased by 15 percent over the last two years with the starting salary near $51,000. A $5,000 signing bonus was initiated for recruits in 2023. Officers also have a $1,200 uniform allowance, premium pay for multilingual skills, specialized training, and 12 weeks of parental leave, according to the city.

Renowned Local Artist Joe Minter Celebrated as His First Solo Show Opens in Birmingham

Long before hundreds of elected officials, neighborhood leaders and artists gathered at the Marc Steel Company in Birmingham’s Titusville community for his first solo show in his hometown, Joe Minter, the artist himself, patrolled the warehouse followed by photographers preparing a shoot for national publications.

The exhibit “Joe Minter Is Here,” which is free and open to the public through October 20, features pieces such as The Peacemaker (1993) made of scrap metal and lawnmower blades and The Many Uses Of Chain (1995) made of scrap metal, plow blade and more than a dozen others.

Surveying much of his art, Minter said, “Miracles come to those that wait, to those that work themselves through a miracle to others.”

While his art can be found in collections from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. this never-before-exhibited work finally came to the city where Minter became an artist of renown.

His morning shoot was a precursor to a ceremony later in the day which celebrated Minter, 81, architect of “African Village in America,” where he has used discarded materials to chronicle the Black experience.

“Joe Minter is special,” said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin as the exhibit opened in the evening. “We celebrate Joe Minter and not just because of his creative genius. We celebrate him because he is authentically Birmingham … his ‘African Village in America’ has become a staple [in his community] and it represents the Black experience.”

The mayor also spoke about how Minter chronicles the Black experience through art. “From being abducted from their ancestral homes in Africa to surviving Jim Crow to dealing with racism and oppression, our people have often felt like outsiders but Joe Minter knows with creativity, with his creativity, with perseverance you can rewrite your own story, you can build a new village from the ground up. You can find a home,” Woodfin said.

Minter encouraged those in attendance to put in their heart to come together because “after 400 years of hurting each other, we might not have it all together but together we have it all.”

In addition to his collections at his Village which go back decades, Minter has completed more than 400 paintings since 2022 as part of what he calls “the trail’s end of telling the story.”

He has never had a formal studio but instead paints in the open air of his driveway at home. Using mostly plywood boards and brushes he picked up at a local retailer, Minter carries forward a narrative and message in vivid color.

Producers of the exhibit want to introduce Minter’s story and work to new generations and highlight the importance of preserving cultural heritage, they said.

During the opening, Alabama Poet Laureate Ashley Jones read an original poem that she dedicated to Minter and later held a conversation about the artist with Dr. Imani Perry, Birmingham native, interdisciplinary scholar, professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and MacArthur Fellow.

The celebration was produced by 1504, a Birmingham based studio dedicated to telling transformative stories and presented by Create Birmingham in partnership with Navigate Affordable Housing Partners.

HBCU Football Roundup: Miles Looks to Remain Unbeaten in SIAC on Saturday

Miles College seems to be on a roll. The Golden Bears (2-2, 2-0) have won their last two games and will look to keep the winning streak going when they host Central State (1-3, 1-1) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.

Miles picked up an impressive 33-13 victory over Allen University last week receiving a huge performance from running back Jonero Scott who had a game-high 179 yards on 26 attempts. Scott also had a 20-yard touchdown run and will certainly be a player to watch in this contest. Scott is the second leading rusher in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) with 352 rushing yards with 4.4 yards per carry.

On defense, the Golden Bears are led by linebacker William Hardy and defensive back Jeremiah Hudson-Davis. Hardy leads the team in total tackles with 29 and Hudson-Davis is second on the team with 24.

In other action in the SIAC, Tuskegee University (1-3, 1-1) will visit Morehouse College (1-3, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. Tuskegee University is coming off a 27-13 win over Edward Waters last week.

The Golden Tigers’ wide receiver Reggie Brigman has been a big part of the team’s passing game. Brigman has 15 catches for 271 yards this season.

In the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Alabama State (2-2, 1-0) will entertain Florida A&M (2-2, 0-0) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The Hornets posted a 26-21 win over Bethune-Cookman last week. ASU will battle a FAMU squad that has one of the best HBCU football teams in the country. The Rattlers are ranked No. 2 in this week’s HBCU Football Coaches Poll.

Alabama A&M (2-2, 0-0) will face Jackson State (3-2, 1-0) on the road Saturday, Oct. 5 with a 4 p.m. kickoff The Bulldogs will return to the gridiron after their game with Florida A&&M was postponed due to Hurricane Helene last week. The game has been rescheduled for Friday, November 29 in Tallahassee, Florida.

NOTICE TO BIDDERS
Sealed Bids for the Repair and Rehabilitation of the Cahaba Pump Station Intake Structure Project will be received by The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham Engineering Department, Attn: Chief Engineer Hattye McCarroll. P.E., 3600 First Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama 35222 until 10:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday October 15, 2024. Bids received after said time will be rejected and returned unopened.
Construction of Cahaba Pump Station Intake Structure Repair and Rehabilitation Project includes but not limited to the following scope of work:
1.    Mobilization and demobilization.
2.    Repair and rehabilitate defects in the concrete on the Cahaba Pump Station motor deck, valve room, intake room, and exterior walls. This includes removal, surface preparation and installation of repair materials on deteriorated areas and cracks as indicated on the drawings and as required in the specifications.
Bids shall be based on a lump sum plus contingency allowance items as indicated in the Bid Form.

Prime Contractor bidders may obtain one complete set of Bidding Documents on or after September 9, 2024, from the office of the Chief Engineer of The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham upon payment of a $300.00 deposit by company check or by certified check and signing a nondisclosure statement. No personal checks or any other form of payment except as noted will be accepted. This deposit shall be refunded in full to each prime contractor bidder upon the return of the Bidding Documents in a reusable condition within 10 days after the bid opening. Additional sets of Bidding Documents for prime contractor bidders, subcontractors, vendors or dealers may be obtained upon payment of said $300.00 deposit and signing a nondisclosure statement.  This deposit shall be refunded less the costs of printing, reproduction, handling, and distribution, upon return of the documents in reusable condition within 10 days after the bid opening. A mandatory pre-bid conference and site visit will be held at 10:00 a.m. local time on Thursday September 26, 2024, at OWNER’s Cahaba Pump Station Museum, located at 4012 Sicard Hollow Rd, Birmingham, AL 35243. All prospective Bidders and interested parties are required to attend the pre-bid conference.  The purpose of the pre-bid conference is to raise questions pertaining to the Bidding and Contract documents and for the OWNER or its representatives to clarify any points. HUB Resource Engagement Form (HUB Form 3) must be completed and included with all sealed bids for construction contracts with the BWWB.  Bids will NOT BE ACCEPTED from any Prospective Bidder who does not attend the mandatory Pre-Bid Conference.
Each bid shall be accompanied by a cashier’s check, drawn on an Alabama Bank, or bid Bond in the amount of five percent (5%) of the bid not to exceed $50,000.00 in the form and subject to conditions provided for in the Specifications.
The successful Bidder will be required to furnish a Performance Bond and a Payment Bond each in an amount equal to 100 percent of the Contract Award.
Bidders shall comply with all statutory requirements in accordance with the Instructions to Bidders. Bids will only be received from Contractors who are licensed by the State of Alabama.
Contract time of commencement and completion will be in accordance with the Agreement.
The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham (“BWWB”) has adopted a voluntary Historically Underutilized Business (“HUB”) Program designed to encourage the participation of HUB firms in construction projects. To that end, the BWWB will never exclude any firm from participation in, deny any person benefits of, or otherwise discriminate in connection with the award and performance of BWWB contracts based on racial, gender, social, or economic status.
It is the intent of the BWWB to foster competition among contractors, suppliers and vendors that will result in better quality and more economical services for the BWWB. Under this program, the BWWB has established a goal of 30% participation of HUB firms for services required for BWWB construction projects. The BWWB’s stated goal will not be the determining factor in construction contract awards; rather bidders must demonstrate compliance with the Good Faith Efforts, more particularly outlined in the HUB Program, toward meeting said goal.
Failure on the part of a bidder to fully submit the information required herein may be considered by the BWWB in evaluating whether the bidder is responsive to bid requirements.
Alabama Code §31-13-9 (1975) provides that as a condition for the award of any contract by The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham,  a business entity or employer that employs one or more employees within the state of Alabama shall provide documentation of enrollment in the E-Verify program.
Each Prospective Bidder must complete, as a condition for the award of any Contract by The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham, the Certification Regarding Debarment in Section 00 20 10.  The Certification must be complete in its entirety and must be included with the Prospective Bidder’s Bid (NO EXCEPTIONS).
Legislature of Alabama Act 2013-205 grants the Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR) the authority to issue certificates of exemption from sales and use taxes for construction projects for certain governmental agencies. Pursuant to Act 2013-205, Section 1(g) the Contractor accounts for the sales tax not included in the Bid Form by submitting an Accounting of Sales Tax-Attachment to    BWWB Bid Form. Failure to provide an accounting of sales tax shall render the bid non-responsive. Other than determining responsiveness, sales tax accounting shall not affect the bid pricing nor be considered in the determination of the lowest responsible and responsive bidder. A. SCOPE OF WORK:
The project consists of the demolition of 2,400 SF of existing office space on the 3rd floor of the UAB Medical Education Building to create a shelled space for a future security operations center fit-out. The scope of work includes architectural, electrical, and mechanical demolition. The construction budget is anticipated to be between $100,000 and $200,000.
The work will be performed under a single Prime General Contractor who will coordinate the work of this project. Particular and specific care will be required to coordinate complex shutdowns, limit disturbances and follow strict Infection Controls and Interim Life Safety Measures (ICRA/ILSM) requirements for the protection of patients, family and staff. The Prime General Contractors seeking to be pre-qualified will require experience with similar size and type hospital projects performed in and adjacent to an operating hospital environment and with the implementation and maintenance of infection control measures, interim life safety measures, coordinating shutdowns, and maintaining a clean and organized job site in an operating hospital. The General Contractor must have experience with representative projects as a General Contractor (not as a Construction Manager, Program Manager, etc.)
B. PRIME GENERAL CONTRACTOR BIDDER PRE-QUALIFICATIONS:

A performance bond equal to 100% of the contract amount and a payment bond equal to 100% of the contract amount will be required of the successful bidder. Said bonds shall be executed by a surety company duly authorized and qualified to make such bonds in the State of Alabama.
Liability insurance certificates shall be required of the successful bidder and such certificates shall list the City of Birmingham, its officials, agents, and employees as additional named insured.
Only bids submitted by General Contractors licensed in the State of Alabama in accordance with Title 34, Chapter 8 of the Code of Alabama (1975 as amended) will be considered.
Bids shall be submitted in a sealed envelope marked “SEALED BID – ARPA FUNDED BRT & District 3 Sidewalk Improvements. Contractors shall write his or her State of Alabama general contractor’s license number and the name of the company submitting the bid on the outside of the sealed bid envelope.
The sealed bid envelope shall contain the following documents: (1) the Form of Proposal, (2) the Authorization to execute the Form of Proposal, (3) bid bond, (4) MBE/DBE Form A, Form C, and Form D, (5) a copy of the Contractor’s State of Alabama General Contractor’s License, (6) the Contractor’s Completed Debarment Form, (7) and Addendum Acknowledgement.
Special attention is called to the applicability of the Birmingham Plan-Construction Industry Program to this project. Under this Program the utilization of Minority Business Enterprises and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (“MBE/DBE”) is encouraged.  The Construction Industry Authority establishes a system of floating MBE/DBE goals which may differ from year to year and project to project. Overall, these goals shall not be less than the historical participation of MBE/DBE’s in construction projects of the City and its agencies.

The full design scope includes the development and preparation of programming and conceptual plans, space designs, plans and specifications, preparation of bid documents, assistance in the bid process, and construction and warranty phase administration for private and open office space, meeting rooms, and support space. Architectural and Engineering design services shall include plans for comprehensive demolition of interior architecture spaces and replacement with new interior architectural design and new finishes, new systems design (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm, technology, and telecommunications), and office systems furnishings design and specification.
General requirements: The A/E shall be responsible for the professional quality, technical accuracy, and the coordination of the engineering and design work; construction documents shall be signed and “sealed” by the responsible registered professional architect(s) and engineer(s).
The A/E shall coordinate with the appropriate public utility companies and commissions, if required, to prepare connection designs according to the applicable guidelines. Submissions shall be prepared (and revised and resubmitted, if necessary) for securing approvals, class of service, permits, and service hook-ups.
The work shall comply with all applicable City of Birmingham, Jefferson County, State of Alabama, federal codes and regulations. The work shall also comply with any applicable utility provider, construction industry and ASHRAE standards, requirements, and guidelines.
The work shall conform with the “to be established” project budget and scope, once finalized, throughout planning, design, and construction.
The A/E shall make site visits, attend meetings, produce meeting minutes, make presentations, utilize the services of consultants, and submit required deliverables as necessary to execute specific parts of the work ‘to be established’ and in the Contract and the Scope of Work for the project. The A/E will be available to perform optional construction phase services at the agreed upon rate, if requested by the Jefferson County Commission.

A. SCOPE OF WORK:
The project consists of removal and replacement of air compressors and vacuum pumps for use in the Hyperbaric area on the first floor. The project also includes removal of old and installation of new pads for the equipment. A service line will be installed to provide service from the basement to the first floor. The scope includes, but is not limited to, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work, core drilling of existing floors and walls, and medical gas certification.
The work will be performed under a single Prime General Contractor who will coordinate the work of this project. Particular and specific care will be required to coordinate complex shutdowns, limit disturbances and follow strict Infection Control and Interim Life Safety Measures (ICRA/ILSM) requirements for the protection of patients, family, and staff. The Prime General Contractors seeking to be pre-qualified will require experience with similar size and type hospital projects performed in and adjacent to an operating hospital environment and with the implementation and maintenance of infection control measures, interim life safety measures, coordinating shutdowns, and maintaining a clean and organized job site in an operating facility. The General Contractor must have experience with representative projects as a General Contractor (not as a Construction Manager, Program Manager, etc.) The estimated construction cost is between $500,000 and $600,000.
B. PRIME CONTRACTOR BIDDER PRE-QUALIFICATIONS:
Prime contractor bidders interested in submitting a proposal must apply for pre-qualification and must be licensed under the Provision of Title 34, Chapter 8, and Code of Alabama, 1975. A copy of current Alabama Contractors license is to be included in pre-qualification submittal.
Only prime contractor bidders who have completed the pre-qualification process and that have been approved will be eligible to submit a bid/perform work for the Project. Prospective Bidder’s Pre-qualification Package must be received by the Owner’s Project Manager no later than 4:00 PM Central Time, October 24, 2024 after which no further requests will be considered.

First Lady Deidra “Dee” Green is widely known for her ministry at More Than Conquerors Faith Church (MTC) in Southwest Birmingham and as a founder of VIRTUE Inc., an organization that brings a message of restoration and hope to women through various channels, including community events.

Now “Lady Dee,” as she’s affectionately known by her congregants, has been tapped to be the Ambassador for the 2024 Sistah Strut, an annual event held at Birmingham’s Legion Field, courtesy of Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB), held last week on Saturday, September 28.

BBBB, founded by Brenda Phillips-Hong, is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting people with breast cancer, as well as providing education and promoting early detection of breast cancer in minority, low-income, and underserved communities. Among other things, the organization works with local healthcare providers to cover mammogram costs for women and men, and it assists with transportation to treatment for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

Green said she was honored to take on the role as Sistah Strut Ambassador especially knowing the number of women who have battled the disease, including a young woman who worked with her husband, More Than Conquerors Faith Church Pastor Steve Green.

“Robin was an administrative assistant that was working for [Pastor Green] during that time,” said MTC First Lady Green. “Robin was newly married with kids when she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. We, [her church family], made a promise to her that we would do what we can to raise awareness of this disease, [even though she lost her battle with it], and promote early intervention as it relates to breast cancer. And that’s what we’ve been doing.”

Deidre Green’s organization, VIRTUE, or Vessels Imparting and Restoring Temples to Uncontestable Excellence, is almost 20 years old, founded in 2005, just before Robin’s diagnosis.

“Robin was so dear to us and to the ministry. Her story touched not only me but other women in the ministry,” said First Lady Green, adding that Robin’s impact led to fervent outreach.

“As we began to talk to women, I actually found that so many women in the African American community hadn’t had a mammogram and weren’t doing breast self-exams. They didn’t know anything about it,” added Green, who is a registered nurse by profession.

In her day-to-day interactions with women of color, Green encourages them to focus on three areas pertaining to their health, she said: “I call them three keys—Know your body and know what’s normal for you. Know your family history. And test according to what your doctors recommend.”

Virtuous Community Outreach

To raise awareness, First Lady Green’s organization has instituted several creative, unique programming and events. VIRTUE hosted “Here’s the Scoop” in early September at the MTC campus and partnered with other organizations to bring awareness to women’s health issues, including breast cancer.

“We partnered with the city [of Birmingham] last year, and we had national artist [and Mobile, Alabama, native] Jamie Bonfiglio create a mural in City Hall,” said Deidre Green.

Visitors were able to view that mural, entitled “Women on the Journey,” which was dedicated to breast cancer fighters, survivors, and thrivers, from mid-October to December 2023 at the Birmingham City Hall Exhibit Hall. More on that story here.

And that’s not all, as VIRTUE also helps women who are underserved or uninsured with access to mammograms and makeover sessions, provides transportation to and from appointments, and assists with childcare, along with other financial assistance.

Rooted in the Magic City

Deidre Green was born and raised in the Collegeville and Fountain Heights communities of Birmingham. She’s a graduate of A. H. Parker High School and later went to Tuskegee University, in Tuskegee, Alabama, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Immediately after graduating from college, she moved to Georgia and worked in her profession before moving back to Birmingham in 1995. She and Pastor Green have been married for 28 years and have a total of seven children in their blended family.

As part of her ministry, Deridre Green provides encouragement to anyone battling health challenges.

“God knows right where you are. Nothing takes God by surprise. And God is able to do anything,” she said.

And for those specifically battling breast cancer or facing a negative diagnosis, Green shares why examinations are important for women of all ages.

“Breast cancer is not a respecter of persons. It knows no racial divide. [It’s important] to recognize this, even if you’re young. I have a goddaughter who’s 18 now, and the doctor found a little benign mass in her breast [when she was 15]. It just doesn’t discriminate—even if you’re 15-years-old. So, it’s just as important for a young person as it is an older woman to understand her body,” she said.

“We’re praying that we’ll see a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime, but until then, we’ll continue to push toward awareness and testing,” said First Lady Green.

For Breast Cancer Survivor Tonya Allen, Giving Back Is Second Nature

Bessemer, Alabama, native Tonya Allen remembers a trip to St. Vincent’s Hospital (now Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham) in 2020 for a routine checkup.

“My doctor is my [Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.], sister Brenda Taylor. She likes to sit down and hash things over. I said, ‘OK, I’ve got to get back to work now.’ I had already had a 2D mammogram previously, and that day she actually ordered 2D and 3D mammograms that were able to pick up something on my right breast. [I] went through Christmas worrying, and by the second week of January they confirmed that I had being diagnosed with breast cancer,” Allen recalled.

“Here I am thinking I was at the top of my game,” she added. “I was a student at [the University of] West Alabama, working on my certification to become an administrator.”

Mammogram Options

According to BreastCancer.org, “Two types of mammograms are available in the United States: 3D mammograms—also called digital breast tomosynthesis, digital tomosynthesis, or just tomosynthesis—and 2D digital mammograms. Both 2D and 3D mammograms are done in the same way and take the same amount of time.

A 3D mammogram creates a 3D image of each breast using several X-ray images from different angles around the breast, [allowing for a more thorough assessment]. A 2D digital mammogram creates a 2D image of each breast using two X-ray images of each breast. …

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, revealed following both types of mammograms, Allen—who has served as a kindergarten teacher and librarian for the Birmingham City Schools (BCS) system for 26 years—briefly went into a period of sadness.

Faith

“Mentally, I shut down,” she said. “I felt like my life was over. I had to really pull on my faith to help me understand, [so] I reflected on some of the scriptures I learned when I was young.”

Allen learned of her diagnosis in 2020, around the time the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns were put in place, so she spent a lot of time in the hospital alone or communicating with her husband virtually through FaceTime and Zoom.

“God held my hand. … My faith is what help me make it through,” said Allen, who added that two particular Bible scriptures sustained her.

“From Psalm 118:17 [New International Version (NIV)], ‘I will not die but live.’ I recited that often. And from Isaiah 61:3 [NIV], He will give you ‘a crown of beauty instead of ashes,’ even though it didn’t look beautiful when I made it through,” Allen said.

Support Groups

Allen is very active with groups that promote breast cancer awareness.

For years, she has been involved with Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB), a Birmingham-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting people with breast cancer, as well as providing education and promoting early detection of breast cancer in minority, low-income, and underserved communities. Among other things, the organization works with local healthcare providers to cover mammogram costs for women and men, and it assists with transportation to treatment for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

BBBB also hosts the annual Sistah Strut—which took place on Saturday, September 28, at Birmingham’s Legion Field—a fundraising event designed to celebrate breast cancer survivors, promote breast cancer screening, and raise money for free mammograms for uninsured, low-income women. In 2023, BBBB honored Allen with its Brownie Award, which is awarded to breast cancer survivors during the organization’s annual Pink Hat and Tie Luncheon.

Allen also supports PinkTopps Inc., a Bessemer-based organization that focuses on “early detection of breast cancer for women and men under 40 … [by offering] overall breast health education, well-being, and support through advocacy awareness.” PinkTopps presented its 2022–2023 Warrior Award to Allen.

In addition, Allen’s efforts to raise awareness about and support individuals and families dealing with breast cancer have been recognized by Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Tyson, who presented a Resolution to Allen in 2023.

Allen also gets her students involved in helping those dealing with breast cancer. Every year, the Minor Elementary School librarian hosts the “Pink Out,” an event that focuses on breast cancer survivors and their families and celebrates the lives of those who have passed away as a result of their battle with breast cancer. The fourth annual Pink Out will be held on Friday, October 11, at the school beginning at 9:30 a.m.

“The kids dress up in pink, whatever attire they can find that is pink. We ask them for a donation through our PTA, and every single penny is given to the two organizations that helped me during my fight: BBBB and Pink Topps,” said Allen. “I use this platform to help others. … We have had several parents and grandparents who have gone through their battles, and I’ve been there to help push them and help provide resources for them.”

Helping Those Who Are Less Fortunate

Giving back has been the norm for Allen since she was a child. Born and raised in Bessemer, she attended Jess Lainer High School, where she participated in several extracurricular activities, including Peer Assisted Learning/Literacy Strategies (PALS), a tutoring strategy through which students are divided into pairs and alternate between the role of the tutor and tutee.

“Of course, I was a dance girl, too, and I tried to do a lot of studying and volunteer things because of the church I grew up in,” she said, speaking about her church, Restoration Revival Tabernacle, which instilled in her the importance of giving back.

In addition to the influence of her church, Allen and her younger brother, Tommy Spencer, were raised by her their grandparents, mother, and father to “help people who were less fortunate.”

After graduating from Jess Lanier in 1993, Allen attended Alabama State University (ASU) in Montgomery, Alabama, for one year before transferring to Samford University in Homewood, Alabama, in 1994.

“I was that little young girl who wanted to get away from home, so I started at ASU for my undergraduate [studies] and then I transferred. My mom worked at [Samford] as a custodian, so I was able to attend tuition-free. I was blessed in that with God. [At the time], I didn’t see His blessing because I was back home under [my family’s] wings, but it truly was a blessing.”

Cancer Free

Today, Allen is cancer free: “My struggle was not as bad as others. … I went ahead and had a double mastectomy,” a “surgery that removes breast tissue,” according to BreastCancer.org.

A mastectomy, the website explains, is “used to treat breast cancer or to lower the risk of breast cancer developing in people at high risk for the disease (prophylactic mastectomy). Some types of mastectomy remove the entire breast, while other types keep some or all of the breast skin, the nipple, and the areola intact. ….

Allen’s doctors had recommended a lumpectomy, a surgery that removes a breast cancer tumor and the rim of healthy tissue surrounding it (called the margin), according to BreastCancer.org

“The doctors were leaning toward a lumpectomy. I talked to one person who told me she had it and the results were a little bit different for her; [the cancer] jumped to the other breast,” Allen said, adding, “I had been praying to God to tell me what to do.”

Own Your Successes, as Well as Your Failures

It’s probably one of the most liberating sentiments statements and ideas that I’ve ever had: I own it all. What do I mean? Mistakes, losses and missteps, I own them all, as well as the successes, the gigantic leaps forward, and the promotions.

It’s at a point where now that I’m in my 50’s and being “grown grown,” I believe that accountability for myself is one of the strongest attributes that push me forward. Side note, for those of you who may be wondering why I chose the word “grown grown.” It is a level above being just grown, meaning maturity is set in and I’m expected to make better choices or understand the repercussions from not making those good choices.

But back to regularly scheduled programming.

It may seem strange to take responsibility for failure, and for that responsibility to free you, but that’s exactly what it’s done for me. And I’m now going to turn the mirror around and ask you to look. Have you owned your failures as well as your successes? Are you taking accountability for your losses as well as your gigantic leaps forward? If not, that may explain some of the mental challenges, or other challenges in life that you’re experiencing.

Here’s the deal: I’m not saying that any of this is pretty. I’m not saying it’s an easy process, either. But if you want freedom and to walk in peacefulness, then I believe it is necessary. Let me add this balanced ideal, too.

I’m not saying that things were not done wrongfully to you by others. I’m not saying that other people were not in assistance in any sort of negative that’s come to you. But I do believe at the end of the day, and at some point in our lives, we must own our role and our part in our story. It may be uncomfortable, and it may be challenging.

But here’s what I do know.  When you own your path and when you square up and face it, it allows you the stamina and the wherewithal to move forward into your future in a clear conscience. We cannot change the past, but we can use it as a tool to make better decisions for us and for those connected to us in the future.
